What's In A Poker Game?

Poker has always been a favorite game in casinos. Though it can be a game of chance, the return of investment can be pretty high if you know how to play your cards right.

The regular deck that is used to play in poker consists of 52 cards. Before sitting down at a poker table, be sure to check how much the minimum table limit is. After making the first minimum bet, the dealer deals a set of five cards that are face down to each player. After this first deal, the round of betting begins. To be able to stay in the game, you must remember to call and then decide which cards you want to keep and which ones you have to discard.

To take note, you can discard or throw away as many cards as you like. After everyone has decided on which cards they want to keep and have thrown the cards they want to discard, the dealer gives another set of cards, the same amount of cards that each player has thrown away. When this second and final deal has been done, the betting will now commence. Once everyone on the table has done their betting, each player reveals their cards and the highest ranked hand wins the pot on the table.

It is important to know the certain terminologies used when making a bet in poker. The term "call" is used when you just want to bet enough money to match the initial amount that has been bet by your opponent.

For example, when you bet 2 dollars in that last betting, one of your opponents can bet 3 dollars and for the betting to continue, you have to call the bet with another dollar that makes it even at 3 dollars each player. When you use the term "raise", this means that you have to first call the highest bet on the table. Using the same example, once you have made that call for the additional dollar to even the bet at 3 dollars each, you can raise the bet to whatever amount you desire.

You must remember that most tables have a limit to raising a bet that usually depends on the minimum table limit. The last term that you need to familiarize yourself with is the word "fold". This means that you have dropped out of the current round and forfeits your chance to win the pot that's on the table. Remember to only fold whenever you feel that the hand of cards you have has no chance of winning. When you have made the fold, don't put any bet in the pot.

Here are the basic rankings of hand from the lowest to the highest.

The high card is basically any card that doesn't qualify as any of the hands in the game. If no one on the table has a pair or anything better than the pair, the highest card wins. In the event that there are two players that have the same highest card, players should look at the second highest and then the third and so on and so forth. High cards usually determine which player wins when there are multiple high hands in the game. In example, if two players have the same two pairs, the fifth card breaks the tie.

A pair consists of one pair with three distinct cards while with two pairs; this is a hand with two pairs of cards (e.g. Two Jacks and Two Kings). With this hand, the player with the highest pair wins. If in the event when two players have the same ranking pairs, the fifth card determines the winner.

With the hand Three of a Kind, this consists of three cards with the same value. Again, the high card breaks the tie.

A Straight consists of five consecutive cards but not of the same suit. The highest straight wins the pot. In the instance that there are two straights of the same value, the pot is split in half between the two players.

While a Flush consists of five cards of the same suit, the cards don't need to be in consecutive order. In the case where in a flush ties, the highest card breaks the tie.

In Full House, this hand includes one pair of the same value and three cards with the same value (e.g. two Sevens and three Fours). The highest Full House wins.

With Four Of A Kind, this is made up of four cards with the same value. Highest Four wins.

In a Straight Flush, the hand consists of five cards in the same suit in consecutive order.

The highest ranking of hands is the Royal Flush. This is basically the same as a straight flush but the Ace being the highest card used.
